Countryside 'Back on Track' With Arrival of More Salt

COUNTRYSIDE, Ill. - As the weather forecast calls for another round of snow, Countryside Public Works continues to fight the winter weather and is prepared to keep the streets clean.

Countryside is working with their salt vendor to receive their ordered amount of salt. It received two loads of salt on Feb. 11 and has been working extra hard to keep the streets operating smoothly by distributing the salt wisely and trying to retrieve the rest of the undelivered salt. Despite the fact that Public Works prepared for the heavy snow by ordering plenty of salt in advance, North American Salt Company has recently struggled to deliver.

"As always, our first priority is taking care of the people of Countryside," said Mayor Robert Conrad. "Crews are out on our streets right away and they continue to make sure we are prepared for the ongoing battle of winter weather."

Countryside Public Works has been effectively managing its salt allotment by plowing streets and salting intersections and stop signs to provide vehicles with the safest environment possible. They have also repeatedly reached out to North American Salt Company's headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas as well as the local Chicago depot to expedite the delayed salt orders.

"For whatever reason, our vendor is having problems delivering our salt," said Bob Fullar, Superintendent of Public Works, who has been making daily calls to the salt company for two weeks now. "We are trying to help our vendor get back on track with delivery but the weather delays are affecting everyone in Illinois."

Chicago has accumulated over 41.8 inches of snow in the 2007-2008 winter season, according to the National Weather Service. This ranks as the 9th overall greatest snowfall seasonal total in Chicago history. The last time the area received this much snowfall was the 1978-1979 winter season.

Fullar recommends that Countryside residents continue to be careful when driving in such severe climate conditions.

"As with any weather situation, I would advise residents to use caution and to drive as conditions dictate," said Fullar.
