Safety first

COUNTRYSIDE, Ill. - In the case of hazardous weather, Countryside residents will be warned.

A new outdoor warning siren has been installed at 5901 S. LaGrange Road. The new siren replaces an existing siren with new technology, including high intensity warning signals, and increased coverage that will provide Countryside residents and nearby communities with early warning in the event of hazardous weather conditions.

"The health and safety of our residents is most important and the installation of this new siren continues to make that a priority," said Mayor Robert Conrad. "We hope to never have to sound the alarm but our residents should know this is in place if such weather would occur."

The siren will be activated to alert residents in the event of a tornado on the ground or funnel cloud aloft is reported within 10 miles of the Pleasantview Fire Protection district, which is the activation control center for this siren. Sightings in or closer than Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lemont, Naperville, Oak Brook, Oak Lawn, Palos Park, Romeoville and Westchester will be reason to sound the alarm. The tone-alert siren also could be used in case of a wide-spread emergency.

A trained employee of police, fire or emergency management will confirm the spotting before an alarm is sounded.

Conrad also expressed his appreciation to Jay Weinburger of Continental Honda for allowing the City to access and utilize their property to facilitate the installation of the new warning siren. Without the dealership's assistance, the removal and installation of the new siren would have been difficult to accomplish.

In 2005, the City was certified as a StormReady community. In order to receive this designation, a community must establish a 24-hour warning point and an emergency operations center, have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings to alert the public, create a system that monitors local weather conditions, develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises, and promote the importance of public readiness through public education.

The City warns that in the event of threatening weather, people indoors should have alternate warning devices such as weather alert radios or monitor local television, cable or radio stations should an outdoor warning siren not be heard.
