Helping the Good Guys COUNTRYSIDE, Ill. - The Countryside Police Department will be honored by the City Council for raising over $7,000 in 2007. The donation, which is more than $2,500 over their 2006 fundraising total, will benefit the Special Olympics.
At Wednesday's City Council Meeting, Mayor Robert Conrad will award a recognition plaque to Officer Karl Rodey for the department's outstanding efforts.
"This is something we really enjoy doing," said Officer Rodey, the department's fundraising leader. "It was a great opportunity to interact with the community while raising money for a very good cause."
The Police Department fundraised through a number of creative events. They hosted regular "Cop on Top" promotions at the Countryside Dunkin' Donuts, during which the officers, standing rooftop, would solicit donations from the customers on the ground. They also participated in "Cops & Tables" in which the officers collected charity tips for bussing tables at Ledo's Pizza. They worked with local schools as well, implementing the "Coins for a Cause" program in which elementary classrooms competed to amass the most coins. "Coins for a Cause" raised $750 in just three weeks.
"We are proud of our police department," said Mayor Conrad. "Whether it's being out on our City streets or giving back to others, our officers never stop working for the community."
Rodey has been involved with the Special Olympics for 19 years. He attended the games last summer and is looking forward to being present at the 2008 Special Olympics at Illinois State University. After putting into action a number of new programs in 2007, Officer Rodey says his department will not lighten its load in 2008.
"We always aim to raise more money each year," said Rodey. "Next year will be no different-- we've already got eight new fundraisers in the works."
The City Council meeting will take place at City Hall, 5550 East Avenue. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
