Protecting our waters COUNTRYSIDE, Ill. - The Countryside City Council adopted a resolution during its July 25 meeting strongly opposing the proposed increase in pollution by the British Petroleum oil refinery near Whiting, Ind.
"Lake Michigan is the source of Countryside's drinking water and major source of recreation for City residents to say nothing of the lake's aesthetic value," Countryside Mayor Robert Conrad said. "Deteriorating the quality of Lake Michigan will deteriorate the region's quality of life and endanger our precious drinking water supply."
BP is planning a $3.8 billion plant expansion that would require them to discharge 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more solids into Lake Michigan, the source of Countryside's drinking water and a major source of recreation for residents.
Conrad encourages all residents to sign a petition to stop BP from dumping up to 1,500 pounds of ammonia into the lake every day. To sign the petition, log onto gocountryside.net and click on the feature.
"It is unthinkable that a company would pollute our water supply, our vital source of drinking water," Conrad said.
Water is very important to the City of Countryside especially since the City was founded because people needed water. In 1960, a group of citizens banded together to form a city with the goal of getting water to their homes, Conrad said.
